The Undergraduate Program in Islamic Religious Education (PAI) at Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY) was established as a strategic response to the dynamics of global transformation and increasingly complex socio-cultural shifts. Operating under the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIPOL), this program is committed to delivering superior, creative, and innovative education rooted in the values of Pancasila. Its presence aims to prepare educators capable of integrating Islamic values with advancements in science and technology to meet the challenges of the Industrial Revolution 4.0 and Society 5.0 eras.
The scientific vision of the PAI Study Program is distinctive: to become a leading program in providing humanistic and inclusive Islamic education, grounded in social sciences and local cultural contexts. Through this "humanistic and inclusive" character, students are trained to possess rational religious reasoning and high social sensitivity within a diverse society. Consequently, the learning process is not limited to transmitting normative teachings but is directed toward an understanding of Islam that is rahmatan lil ‘alamin (a blessing for the universe) and moderate.
The curriculum is based on Outcome-Based Education (OBE), aligning learning outcomes with the practical needs of the professional world and society. This structural framework integrates deep mastery of Islamic sciences—such as the Quran, Hadith, Creed and Ethics (Akidah Akhlak), and Jurisprudence (Fiqh)—with a multidisciplinary approach involving sociology, anthropology, and educational psychology. This ensures that graduates possess a strong epistemological foundation while being able to contextualize Islamic teachings to address contemporary issues.
Beyond academic excellence, the program places significant emphasis on strengthening 21st-century skills, including digital literacy and edupreneurship. Students are encouraged to become innovators capable of developing Islamic educational content based on creative digital technology and media. A student-centered learning approach and the implementation of the Merdeka Belajar–Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) policy serve as the main pillars in building graduates' readiness to face future challenges.
The graduate profile of the PAI Study Program is designed to produce adaptive professional Islamic education teachers, educational managers, and innovative practitioners. Graduates are equipped with the ability to design and evaluate inclusive learning models while maintaining high moral integrity. It is expected that every alumnus will play an active role as an agent of transformation in Islamic education, making meaningful contributions to society at local, national, and international levels.
Overall, the PAI Study Program at UNY serves as a dynamic and visionary hub for intellectual and spiritual development. Supported by UNY’s long history as a leading educational institution, the program continues to strive for a balance between fundamental Islamic values and the demands of changing times. This commitment is realized through professional management to produce pious, independent, and scholarly individuals ready to serve for the benefit of the community and the nation.
